The
Sorkočević Palace, once a residential building, became property of
the Dubrovnik Diocese in 19th century. Architecturally, the building bears medieval
renaissance features on its ground floor, and mostly baroque features on its
upper floors. This valuable monument, part of the protected cultural heritage
of Dubrovnik, sustained heavy damage in the 1979 earthquake and again during
1991-92 war when roof was destroyed by mortal shelling.
On March 17, 2003, rehabilitation works on the Bishops Palace started. During
the first phase which involved the restoration of the 3rd floor roof and ceiling,
wooden painted ceiling beams were discovered under the ceiling plaster. The
painted wooden beams have been dismantled and protected. Due to lack of funding,
the beams are still waiting for final interventions and restoration.
Estimated funding needed to finalize the restoration of the painted beams is
US $ 95.000.
